Typhoon number 15, Chanhom, was about 130 kilometres east of Mito at 15:00 on Tuesday, moving west-southwest at around 30 kilometres an hour, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Central pressure was 980 hectopascals, with maximum sustained winds near the centre of 25 metres per second and maximum gusts of 35.

The storm-force field, where winds reach 15 metres per second or more, extended 500 kilometres to the north-east and 390 kilometres to the south-west.

By 03:00 on Wednesday the agency expects the centre to be about 30 kilometres north-east of Nagoya, with pressure up to 990 hectopascals and maximum winds down to 20 metres per second. It then forecasts a westward track, reaching about 40 kilometres north of Tottori by 15:00 on Wednesday and weakening to a tropical depression at 996 hectopascals.

The figures are from the agency's 15:50 bulletin on 11 August.
